Comedy Festival
Taking place from March 31 to April 1, this new comedy festival is set to become an annual event.
There will be entertainment over lunchtime on Saturday afternoon on Blackpool’s newest attraction, the Comedy Carpet followed by an adult comedy show in the Merrie England Bar on North Pier at 9.30pm starring Slaughterhouse Live. Led by panto regular Steve Royle, they have a cult following on the comedy circuit & have had their own show on Granada TV.
The weekend culminates with the Comedy Carpet Live Gala Show at the Grand Theatre starring comedy illusionists Barry & Stuart (from BBC TV’s The Magicians). Frisky & Mannish (from BBC Radio 1), Jeremy Lion (Justin Edwards from, “Have I Got News for You” & “Mock the Week”), Bernie Clifton & Chris Ramsay (who has an upcoming new BBC series) provide even more laughs.
This event will be scheduled for the week before Easter each year.

The Changing Face of Blackpool Prom
It has taken a long time (& even more money) but Blackpool Prom is looking magnificent! Gone is the straight beach, replaced with sweeping curves & headlands which will house new attractions. Steps down to the beach along the whole length of the Prom have created new seating areas with excellent views of the sea & events such as the Airshow & the World Fireworks Championships. Bikes are available for hire & can be returned to other stations around the resort. The Tower Headland is the last to be finished & will be open by July; this houses a wedding chapel overlooking the sea & the “comedy carpet” … a hollywood-style tribute to famous comedians … with their catch-phrases captured in granite.
If you’ve not seen it yet, it is well-worth the journey.

The Changing Face of Blackpool Town Centre
The area around St John’s Square has been pedestrianised & cobbled & the eateries there are able to make use of the space for al fresco dining.
Birley Street has been transformed into a Freemont Street (Las Vegas)- style attraction with huge Loch Ness Monster-style arches bathng the area in soft lighting & music. This pedestrianised street is full of cafes & more al fresco dining.
The Houndhill Centre is Blackpool’s under-cover shopping mall with national chains such as Primark, Next, Deichmann, Clarks, New Look, Jane Norman, La Senza & the flagship development, Debenhams. There are plenty of places to eat & drink here or even just to sit & people watch.
The Changing Face of St John’s Square, Blackpool
This square is just on the edge of the town centre, at the entrance to the Winter Gardens; it is now a traffic-free zone with dancing fountains & sculptures on a modern cobbled floor. It has become an open-air entertainment venue for events such as the Christmas lights switch on & Showzam in February.

Top Score Awarded to the Wescoe Hotel Blackpool
VisitBritain (The Tourist Board) sent a “mystery shopper” to the Wescoe this week for an unannounced overnight stay. Marks are awarded for cleanliness, hospitality, bedrooms, bathrooms, public areas, food … infact every aspect of the visit through from the initial booking to departure. The assessor was particularly impressed with our cleanliness, upgrade rooms & hospitality, awarding us with the very highest possible score in the 3 star category! She said in her report:
” The Wescoe is at the top of the three star guesthouse rating band…With its current three star rating, The Wescoe will continue to exceed guests’ expectations compared with other properties in the same grading band”.
